My niece was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. We were told when she was diagnosed the new thinking is diabetes is an autoimmune issue. If this is the case could the MP work to maintain her remaining islet cells that are still functioning and possibly reverse the disease? There is a family history of Th1 disease. I will be starting the MP myself very soon for sarcoid. I would greatly appreciate any thoughts that Dr. Marshall may have on this particular application of the MP. Thank you Laurie
Laurie,
We have two members of our cohort with insulin infusers and Type 1 diabetes. We are gathering data, and are not yet at the point of being able to state definitively that Type 1 will resolve with time, as Type 2 does. It is my opinion, however, based on the Diabetes research in which I have been involved, that Type 1 diabetes is due to an invasion of the pancreas by monocytes and macrophages, and that removing the source of attraction for those monocytes, which I believe to be Th1 infected pancreatic tissue, should eventually restore pancreatic function.
The biggest uncertainty at this point is whether the exogenous insulin itself plays any negative role in the Type 1 disease pathogenesis.
Thank you, this information is very helpful. I will be addressing this with her current doctor and her parents. Although this is uncharted territory it would be beyond fabulous if your work can positively impact my niece. Thank you so much.
