I started taking Benicar last Thursday evening and it seems to have had very little effect on me so far.  I was planning on taking it without the minoxacycline for another week because my 125-D level was 76.  Is it unusual for me to have had almost no noticable results?  Could it be because of my diet?  I have had to dramatically change the things I eat to participate in the MP.  On the diet site, there seems to be so much conflicting information.  It says fruits are okay but don't drink alot of fruit juice.  Somewhere else it says do not eat alot of small sweet fruits.  So far, I have been eating fruits that are in season as my snacking foods.  I have eaten grapes almost daily along with apples, and occasional orange and maybe a pear once a week.  Even with me eating these fruits, I have lost almost a pound every two days since I started trying to eliminate my vitamin D.  I have lost 30 pounds since I started on September 20.  If I cut down on or eliminate my fruit intake, I am afraid I will lose weight at even a faster pace.  I know there seems to be alot of disagreement about what is okay to eat and what isn't.  Should I cut down or eliminate eating grapes?  Could that be why I'm not herxing or am I just one of those people that feels better on Benicar?

Hello mcnairvermont,
I don't think it's all that unusual to not herx noticeably from Benicar alone.
If I recall, I had some very slight changes but nothing like when you start the mino. I believe it is recommended to wait for two weeks before starting the mino.
As far as diet is concerned, I remember being very confused in the beginning until I read something Meg Mangin said, "you have to eat something"...so I relaxed a bit when I realized of course she's right. The goal is to eliminate as much Vit D and folic acid as possible. I do very nicely by simply eliminating eggs, milk (I use non fortified Organic milk or heavy cream), fish, mushrooms and supplements such as fish oil. I am careful reading labels..and I try to eat wholesome home cooked meals. I eat fruit, in moderation. I avoid sugar and coffee. I even eat a good deal of cheese-as long as the Vit. A content is 6 or less and there is no added Vit. D. My D is down to <4.
I guess everyone is different...but this has worked for me.

Thanks for responding.  I am so happy I have the opportunity to do the MP.  I wan't to make sure that I am doing it right.  It's nice to see someone apply common sense to the equation.  I am going to cut down on the fruit intake and just see what happens.  I hope to get my first real herx soon!! Thank you again!!

Tom

The most important thing with the diet is avoiding vit D. Some fruit is OK, but fruit contains sugar, so you can't have too much and stay low-carb.

Could you perhaps increase your fat intake to try to stop losing too much weight? The reason for the low-carb diet is that your body can use fat, but many species of bacteria can only use glucose.

Hey, Tom.  Oh, you'll herx.  *big warm smile*  That's the whole direction of the treatment.  It's like standing on a Hawaiian beach, saying I'm looking forward to the surf while you are holding your board and stepping into the ocean.  Soon you'll be an old pro at this.
