We were pleasantly suprised yesterday, when I filled my wife's first script for 40mg benicar. The cost was $198 for 90 tablets, and CIGNA actually covered $148 leaving me a $50 copay!
Evidently the 40mg tablets are $2.17 each, relatively expensive. I understand that this is considered an "off lable" use and the dosage is alot higher than the typical blood pressure management dosage is.
I wonder is this is typical. I was prepared to do battle with the insurance company, all the letters printed and signed. stamped and ready to mail. The letter is available on this web site if your insurance company balks at the cost or the dosage.
Good luck.

That does seem rather expensive. The full cost of my 120 x 40 mg tablets is listed as AU$96.45, which works out to a little over AU$0.80 per tablet, or US$0.65. I don't know if the average price is higher in the US.
Anyway, I guess you don't have too much to complain about if your insurance claims are being accepted.

I agree Benicar is expensive. My question to my Dr. has always been, when can I get a generic substitute? I have been told that one does not exist, yet, my Medicare drug supp. provider, Humana, sent me a form letter suggesting that the following alternatives are available, subject to Dr's approval:
Benazepril HCL-HCTZ; Fosinopril-Hydrochlorothiazide; or Lisinopril-HCTZ
My script is Benicar HCT 40 mg.
Anyone hear of these alternatives as a less expensive substitute?

| Only Olmesartan can be used for the MP, no other drug does the same thing. There is no generic version yet because the patents on Olmesartan don't expire until 2016.

I believe the "HCT" subscript version of Benicar is NOT recomended, only the PLAIN Benicar 40mg. tablets are acceptable.
Pharmaceutical giants have a "windowof opurtunity" to rape people for their "development costs" before a generic can be delivered. In 2016 the generic will become availble.
Good luck.

Please see The right kind of Benicar.
There are generics available from India, I believe, but I don't know how they compare in quality.

I knew I read it somewhere. I knew that the HCT version was not recomended, I could not recall exactly why. Evidently added kinney & liver stress is evidently the reason, thanks for the reminder. We do have the right kind of Benicar
Thanks again.
